We are the Hotel Association of Canada (HAC), the exclusive national organization representing corporate hotel companies, ownership groups, provincial hotel associations, city hotel associations, and independent hotels. The HAC represents more than 8200 hotels, motels and resorts, which employ 306,000 people across Canada.
Our mission is to enhance the prosperity of the Canadian Hotel and Lodging industry through strong member engagement, effective advocacy, and the provision of valued programs and services.
We’re currently in search of a self-motivated Communications and Policy Analyst to join our team.
About the Position – Communications and Policy Analyst
Currently, HAC is focused on two key advocacy issues: fair rules for the short-term rental industry (Airbnb) and the need to address the hotel industry’s critical labour shortage.
As our new Communications and Policy Analyst, you’ll report to the Director of Government Relations, playing a critical supportive role in making our members’ voices heard and helping us bring about legislative solutions to industry challenges. You’ll enjoy a varied role, in which your key tasks will include a mix of research, policy analysis, and communications.
- Conduct research, and monitor media and legislative/political developments on a daily basis, to identify strategic opportunities to advance our agenda
- Analyze research findings and present clear and concise updates and summaries to our government relations and communications team
- Assist in the analysis and drafting of policy documents as they relate to advocacy priorities
- Assist in drafting and editing supporting communications materials (press releases, member updates, reports, etc.) and web content
- Provide communications support for our recently launched labour pilot project, which exists to mobilize new Canadians into available hotel jobs, and act as a direct liaison with our project delivery partner, Tourism HR Canada

This is a full-time permanent role, with an ideal start date of September 2019. We offer a competitive salary, commensurate with experience, as well as benefits and RSP contributions. You’ll work Monday to Friday, 9 am – 5 pm, out of our downtown Ottawa office.
- 2+ years’ experience in the government relations, communications, public policy, and/or research field
- Experience in a role requiring a significant element of research and/or policy analysis
- Superior communications and writing skills, with experience developing and writing content for diverse audiences
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite
- University degree or certificate program in political science, communications, public policy or related
- Experience working for an association or in a non-profit environment is preferred
- Experience with social media and/or campaigning is an asset
- Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset
